Links Archive

I used to put a link on the home page for visitors to follow after they were done checking out my site. This is a collection of those links.

Wil Wheaton dot Net

This site is the blog of Wil Wheaton. You may remember Wil from his critically acclaimed performance in Rob Reiner's film, Stand By Me. He also was a regular on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Wil's site, abbreviated WWdN, is more than just your typical blog. Wil is also a writer and he sure can tell a story.

I found WWdN by following a link to one of Wil's poker stories. Even though I've never played a hand of poker in my life, I know what it's like after reading Wil's Viva Las Vegas story. WWdN is proof that there is quality content on the internet if you know where it is. Wil's been at it for years, and there's so much to read at WWdN, I don't think I'll ever get to it all (but I'll try).

Windows Symphony

Another music related link. When the page comes up, it says "Loading...", but if the "play" link is there, click it.

This site uses default Windows sounds to create a musical piece. And it shows each how each sound is used to make it's contribution to the piece. Not much more to say about it except check it out.

The Horn Guy

Get your mind out of the gutter. :) Not the Horny Guy, the Horn Guy.

This clip is in French, but you don't need to understand French to enjoy it. You'll see what I mean when you see it. They say music is the Universal Language.

By the way, in case you didn't notice, I reached a huge goal, a Quarter Million pushups. When I first started, I was thinking to myself, "If I reach a quarter million, I'll be able to do this". Well here it is, so onto my next mini-goal, 333,333 pushups.

Fido Puzzle

This site is pretty amazing. It will read your mind. I tried it 4 times and it was right every time. I'm sure it's a mathmatical thing, but I'm amazed that someone originally figured it out.

When you're done with a page, click on the little guy in the lower right hand corner. Follow the instructions and see if he "reads your mind".

Meankitty

First a disclaimer...I love cats. I really do. We currently have two and have had as many as 4 at one time, and I truly loved them all.

This site is funny because everyone knows or has known a mean cat or two in their lives. Even the sweetest kitties sometimes show their dark side. The cats on this site are the meanest of the mean, *if* you believe their owners' descriptions. After reading about some of these cats, you wonder why their owners keep them. But I really know the answer...We all love our cats.

Domino Artwork

Can you imagine making a picture out of a bunch of sets of dominos? The folks at Domino Artwork can do it. The reason I'm featuring this link is because this reminds me of my hobby of solving "picture forming logic puzzles". Domino Artwork is not puzzles, but the image they form are similar to the puzzles.

I first saw Domino Art over 20 years ago in an old magazine called Omni. They featured a team of people that made portraits using just 3 or 4 sets of dominos. This is much harder that the Domino Artwork's portraits that use 48 sets.

Post-It Theater

This site has "flip-book" entertainment. That's animation created by flipping the pages of a book real fast. Randy Shandis creates these animations by hand on Post-it® brand notes, then scans them. He's been at it for a long time, so there are a lot of these to see in the archive area of his site.

I thought I'd point you to a little movie with pushup humor. Just click on the yellow pad to see it.

Million Pennies

This web page shows what a stack of a million pennies would look like. It also shows some statistic about the stack, like size, weight, etc. It's interesting to start at the "one penny" page and see the progression to one quintillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000).

Starbucks Everywhere

This site reminds me a little of my site. Winter's goal is to visit every Starbucks in the world. He has already visited over 90% of the corporate-owned Starbucks in North America! That's over 4572 stores. And he's got the pictures to prove it. I don't know who's goal is more outrageous, his or mine. At least mine has a definite end...Winter's will change with every new Starbucks that's built. :)      Good Luck Winter.

Now for a bit of trivia about me...I've never been to a Starbucks.

EDIT - I have officially been to a Starbucks. It was in Mexico City. Those who know me know I have a very interesting story about that first visit.

I found this link in a newsletter I subscribe to called Cool Tricks and Trinkets Newsletter.

Perpetual Bubblewrap

A totally useless site...unless you just love to pop the bubbles on bubblewrap. Be sure your sound is working and start popping. Unfortunetly, the bubbles regenerate after you pop them so you can't get the same satisfaction you would if you like to pop whole sheets. (As you might have guessed, I'm a bubble popper) :)

Ulysses' Yield

This time I have a very special link. I just received an email from a former World Record holder for non-stop push-ups, Charles Linster. He saw my web site and offered me words of encouragement. Charles held the world record of 6006 non-stop push-ups from 1965 until 1976. He also wrote this very good article about his push-up story called Ulysses' Yield.

Demotivators 2003 Collection

It's kind of ironic that I have a link called "Demotivators 2003 Collection" since I need to be very motivated to be doing what I'm doing. But this site has a collection of very funny items that mock those motivational posters you see all over Corporate America. I have been in the corporate world my whole career, and I have always laughed at the motivational stuff they try to use. Decent raises and less layoffs work better than messing with my mind.

By the way, I got this link from one of the best newsletters out there, Mike's List

Download the Internet

Not really, but if it was possible to download the entire Internet, the download window might look something like this. Hope you have a fast connection and lots of drive space. :)

SAY YES

Update: Unfortunately, this site has converted to a service that radio stations can use for their website visitors to figure out what song was played at a certain time. So the only way to use this is to go to the radio station's website and hope they use this service. Too bad, this used to be a useful tool.

Have you ever heard a song on the radio and wanted to know it's title and who the artist is? Usually you would have to listen to all the songs after it and hope the DJ says the title and artist. Not anymore with this web site. Just remember the radio station and the time the song was played. This site will tell you the title and artist. It will also provide links to popular sites to buy the CD.

This site also gave me an opportunity to verify something I had suspected about a local radio station. I had always thought they had a lot more commercials than their competitors. So I chose a three hour time span in the middle of the day when both stations didn't have any "talk radio" programming. I counted how many songs both stations played during the time span. I was right, the one station played significantly less songs.

Googlefight

This site is worth 5 or 10 minutes of entertainment. You enter two words and the most popular word, in terms of popularity with Google Search Engine, wins. It's fun when you enter opposite words like Salt and Pepper.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? I don't know, but chicken is more popular.

HowStuffWorks

Like the name says, this site explains, in lay men's words, How Stuff Works. If you're the inquisitive type, this site will certainly hold your interest. Even if you're not the inquisitive type, I bet there's something on this site that you'll enjoy. This is a very popular site and there is a chance you've already visited it. If so, you can use this as a reminder to check it out again.

Cell Phone Stun Gun

Watch out if someone starts jabbing you with their cell phone! This device looks like a cell phone, but is actually a 180,000 volt stun gun. If someone says, "Gimme your phone!", you can let them have it.

By the way, I got this link from one of the best newsletters out there, Mike's List

Blinkenlights

This is an interesting site to me because it reminds me of a kind of puzzle that I enjoy solving called Paint by Number or Nonogram. They illuminate windows in a building to make pictures and animations. They even designed the system so people can play Pong by using their cell phone! Click on a building to see the picture or animation.

WebSpeed

How fast can you really surf the web? Use WebSpeed to measure your true internet throughput to the 40 most popular web sites in the world. Very easy to use, no installation necessary. Just click, wait 30 seconds, then get a report.
